Ivanka Trump, daughter of US President Donald Trump, apparently termed rioters at the US Capitol building as “patriots”, but deleted her tweet soon after being called out to clarify it.

As Trump supporters gathered outside the Capitol building and reports of violence started emerging, Donald Trump tweeted, “Please support out Capitol Police and law enforcement. They are truly on the side of our country. Stay peaceful.”

Retweeting her father’s tweet, Ivanka Trump used the words “American patriots” for the rioters.

However, she added that the Trump supporters must remain peaceful.

“American Patriots – any security breach or disrespect to our law enforcement is unacceptable. The violence must stop immediately. Please be peaceful.”

She later deleted this tweet.

When asked by a CNN reporter to clarify if she was using the term ‘patriots’ for the rioters, Ivanka Trump wrote, “No. Peaceful protest is patriotic. Violence is unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest terms.”

While Donald Trump did ask his supporters to remain peaceful when they started resorting to violence, but reports suggest that it was his tweets that had encouraged them in the first place.

Trump encouraged his supporters to head to the Capitol but later urged them to abide by the law and go back home after the violent clash.

“This was a fraudulent election, but we can’t play into the hands of these people. We have to have peace. So go home,” Trump said in a video message posted on Twitter.

The micro blogging site later removed the video and some tweets in which Trump appeared to defend the actions of his supporters. Twitter also locked President Trump’s account for 12 hours.
